TOP NOTCH AND THE SLUTSKY FAMILY
THE HISTORY OF HOW WE GOT HERE
2008 MARKS TOP NOTCH'S 50TH YEAR IN BUSINESS. It started as a small appetizing store in Brooklyn, in 1957. A few years later it was moved to a new larger store in the center of Oceanside, a fast growing community on Long Island's South Shore. The original owners eventually retired and a new vibrant family took the helm. The Rubin Family has guided the growth of TOP NOTCH for fifteen years. During that time they added a Deli department and expanded the catering end of the business. Most important they maintained the high quality of the store’s appetizing. TOPNOTCH maintained the reputation of Long Island's premier appetizing store. To find similar quality one would have to scour Manhattan. As any true connoisseur will tell you "New York has no equal when it comes to gourmet appetizing" and TOPNOTCH is as good as it gets. Our thanks to Jeff and Judy for fifteen wonderful years.
In 2007, the Slutsky Family has chosen to guide this New York experience into the future. We come with a long history of experience. We plan on remodeling the store in 2008 to accommodate the growing number of patrons that enjoy being able to sit and relax while savoring the taste of the "World's Finest" lox on their "hand-rolled bagel," a smear of their favorite cream cheese with thick slices of Bermuda Onion and Beefsteak Tomato.
The Slutsky Family consists of Grandpa Len and grandma Giggy. If you like great don't forget Giggy's brownies and mondel bread with Len’s own blend of fresh ground coffee. Then there is Jason, Lana and Breaden. Jason is in the store almost everyday. It's his job to keep the quality of all the TOPNOTCH products at TOP NOTCH levels. Lana watches Breaden, who is still in training for the future. Rounding out the crew is Adam, Dana, and Hudson. Adam takes care of the business end insuring that only the finest ingredients go into TOPNOTCH's delicacies. He also covers for his brother when Jason can't be on hand. Dana watches Hudson, who is also in training for the future. Right now he's learning how to eat (is there a jar of corned beef baby food in the house?). Dana has another very important job. She is in charge of recipes. TOP NOTCH has many recipes that uniquely our own. Many of our customers have been enjoying our recipes fro decades. Dana's Grandma, Helen, owned and operated a very popular Kosher Deli in Brooklyn (The Hebrew National on Avenue U) for many years. Grandma Helen taught Grandma Rose and now both Helen and Rose have passed those great recipes to Dana. Just wait 'til you taste Grandma Rose's vegetable soup, you can cut it with a knife.
Jason who slices smoked salmon with the best of 'em, and Adam are committed to bringing the Deli end of the business up to the high level everyone knows and expects of TOP NOTCH. We are taking steps to bring our customers more quality products. A variety of new wonderful foods to taste and enjoy. A few new services such as baskets of fruits, cakes, and candies. You should see our new selection of coffees and teas. We grind the beans right in front of you. Try Len's Blend for a strong robust flavorful coffee. Len says, "If you don't like it, I'll buy it." Come in on Sunday, Len is there so you know it's his coffee brewing on Sunday. Try a cup, sit, relax, and chat.
Come on in and say hello to Chris "Moshe" Metz, the new master Executive Chef in the Deli Department. Chris trained at Cordon Blue in London, was the Executive Chef at "Arties New York Deli" on Broadway in Manhattan for seven years and for the six years before that he was the Executive Chef at "King David Delicatessen" in Cedarhurst. He makes the best handmade knishes you have ever tasted. His recipe for curing the corned beef and pastrami are second to none. Try some of our meats fresh from the hot streamer and put between two pieces of fresh baked rye bread in our soon to be overstuffed super sandwich.
Over 2008 the store will start to look different. Although we may put in new counters, ceiling, lights, tables and more, we promise two things: to keep our food kosher and keep the quality our customers have come to expect and enjoy from us.
As Grandma Helen says: "Maybe a good Brisket sandwich you would like, with derma, gravy and a Dr. Brown’s Celery Soda." It's like 1957.

"Come in this weekend, have a free taste of our corned beef and pastrami on me"
